Ci sono dei dischi speciali che nascono per caso e forse, anche grazie a segrete dinamiche celesti. Cio' che rende detti dischi ancora piu' speciali avviene quando due artisti, appartenenti a due diversi macrocosmi musicali, riescono a sposare i loro rispettivi stili, facendoli confluire in un contesto comune dove possono applicare sperimentazioni musicali che unificano due mondi musicali diversi, facendoli diventare un tutt'uno.
Quale sia stata la molla che ha spinto a collaborare due celebrati artisti come il bassista, multi-strumentalista, produttore e compositore di colonne sonore cinematografiche italiano Gianni Maroccolo e il chitarrista australiano dei Bad Seeds, nonche' cantante, autore e frontman del gruppo Post-Punk The Wreckery, Hugo Race, a scrivere e registrare un disco in combutta chiamato The Vigil, non ci e' dato saperlo ma chiunque dei due avesse proposto questa collaborazione musicale, ci aveva visto davvero lungo sin dall'inizio.
Frutto di una idea nata nel 2022, The Vigil e' un album che incorpora otto tracce che, nelle sue liriche, e' inteso da Race e Maroccolo come una serie di storie individuali che hanno in comune cupe introspezioni personali, appartenenti a personaggi provenienti da un mondo immaginario (ma neanche poi tanto), dove l'eccessiva applicazione della tecnologia ha sovrastato e quasi del tutto annientato il lato emozionale dell'essere umano.
Supportati in studio da strumentisti di grande esperienza come Antonio Aiazzi al pianoforte, organo e sintetizzatori, Andrea Pelosini alla batteria e Nicola Baronti alle percussioni, MS20 e strumentazione elettronica, Race e Maroccolo tirano fuori dal loro background artistico momenti di grandi intuizioni sia vocali che sonore, con Race che divide il suo stile canoro tra parlato e cantato, un qualcosa che ricorda, per certi versi, stlisticamente, un moderno Roger Waters ma con un piglio un po' piu' potente e cavernoso, un aspetto che enfatizza ancora di piu' lo spessore delle vicende umane contenute in ciascuno dei brani all'interno di The Vigil.
Ascoltando attentamente The Vigil, si ha la netta sensazione che la strumentazione scelta dai due artisti per ogni singolo brano si ponga perfettamente al servizio della narrazione. Il disco di Hugo Race e Gianni Maroccolo presenta sicuramente una realta' volutamente distopica, all'interno delle canzoni parte di The Vigil (frutto forse della recente pandemia che ha colpito l'intero pianeta, qualche anno prima che questo progetto venisse ideato) ma cio' non deve distogliere l'ascoltatore dalla minuziosa ricerca sonora impiegata da Maroccolo e Race per il loro album, dove i toni musicali, sospesi a meta' tra Avant/Garde industriale ed Electronica, colgono appieno quel senso che ricorre spesso attraverso il cantato di Race, da parte dei protagonisti immaginari di ciascun brano, di tentare di esorcizzare il terrore dell'isolamento e del vuoto cosmico e morale lasciato dai progressi scientifici e tecnologici attraverso la speranza e l'istinto di sopravvivenza.
L'intreccio artistico tra Race e Maroccolo, una volta ascoltato il loro splendido disco, ha perfettamente senso; da una parte, Hugo Race e' molto creativo nell'instaurare scenari lirici spesso ultraterreni e talvolta cupi, attraverso il suo stile canoro. Dall'altra parte, il basso di Gianni Maroccolo "legge" perfettamente la direzione espressiva di Race su ogni brano, mettendo insieme dei mantra sonori di gran livello e creando, insieme ai talentuosi musicisti che affiancano Maroccolo e Race sul progetto The Vigil, delle ambientazioni elettroniche che sposano perfettamente le tematiche post-futuristiche immaginate dai due artisti.
Un disco intenso, visionario, minuziosamente curato in ogni dettaglio e suonato in maniera impeccabile, The Vigil e' una scheggia sonora e lirica di stampo Orwelliano, riportato in chiave contemporanea da due tra i piu talentuosi e proteiformi artisti di questa generazione.

There are special records that are born by chance and perhaps also thanks to secret celestial dynamics. What makes these records even more special happens when two artists, belonging to two different musical macrocosms, manage to marry their respective styles, making them flow into a common context where they can apply musical experiments that unify two different musical worlds, making them become one.
What was the driving force that pushed two celebrated artists like the Italian bassist, multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer of film soundtracks Gianni Maroccolo and the Australian guitarist of the Bad Seeds, as well as singer, songwriter and frontman of the Post-Punk group The Wreckery, Hugo Race, to collaborate to write and record an album together called The Vigil, we cannot know, but whoever of the two proposed this musical collaboration had really seen things through very wisely from the beginning.
As a result of a project born in 2022, The Vigil is an album that incorporates eight tracks that, in its lyrics, is intended by Race and Maroccolo as a series of individual stories that have in common dark personal introspections, belonging to characters from an imaginary world (but not so much), where the excessive application of technology has overwhelmed and almost completely annihilated the emotional side of the human being.
Supported in the studio by highly experienced instrumentalists such as Antonio Aiazzi on piano, organ and synthesizers, Andrea Pelosini on drums and Nicola Baronti on percussion, MS20 and electronic instrumentation, Race and Maroccolo bring out from their artistic background moments of great vocal and sonic intuition, with Race dividing his singing style between a spoken and a properly sung ones, something that echoes, in some ways, stylistically, a contemporary version of Roger Waters' singing style, but with a slightly more powerful and cavernous approach coming from Race, an aspect that emphasizes even more the depth of the human stories contained in each of the songs within The Vigil.
Listening carefully to The Vigil, one has the clear feeling that the instrumentation chosen by the two artists for each individual track is perfectly at the service of the lyrical narration. Hugo Race and Gianni Maroccolo's album certainly presents a deliberately dystopian reality, within the songs part of The Vigil (perhaps the result of the recent pandemic that hit the entire planet, a few years before this project was conceived) but this should not distract the listener from the meticulous sound research employed by Maroccolo and Race for their album, where the musical tones, suspended halfway between industrial Avant/Garde and Electronica, fully capture that sense that often recurs through Race's singing, by the imaginary protagonists of each track, of trying to exorcise the terror of isolation and the cosmic and moral void left by scientific and technological progress through hope and survival instinct.
The artistic intertwining between Race and Maroccolo, once you listen to their splendid album, makes perfect sense; on one hand, Hugo Race is very creative in establishing lyrical scenarios that are often otherworldly and sometimes dark, through his singing style. On the other hand, Gianni Maroccolo's bass perfectly "reads" Race's expressive direction on each of the album's track, putting together high-level sonic mantras and creating, together with the talented musicians who supported Maroccolo and Race on the project The Vigil, electronic environments that perfectly marry the post-futuristic themes imagined by the two artists for this record.
An intense, visionary album, meticulously curated in every detail and played impeccably, The Vigil is a sonic and lyrical shard of Orwellian inspiration, brought back to the contemporary music scene by two of the most talented and multifaceted artists of this generation.
